Natural Resources Canada’s is investing $2 million in Sky Solar Canada Ltd. for a total of 12 solar-powered electric vehicle charging stations at five sites across Ontario. Three of the sites are located in Cobourg, one in Markham and one in Oxford Station.

This project aims to demonstrate bi-directional capable electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in combination with solar photovoltaic (PV) and battery storage. The bi-directional charging technology makes it possible for the EV to act as an alternative power source, as well as help balance the local grid, or renewable electricity production. The charging technology will be incorporated in commercial, institutional and First Nations locations, where vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology will be demonstrated. The project will help determine if there is a commercial case for V2G for EV and charging station owners.

“This project — and others like it — will help to ensure that Canada is a global leader in the transition to a lower-carbon future,” says Kim Rudd, MP for Northumberland-Peterborough South, where some of the units will be installed. “Our government continues to support projects that reduce pollution, encourage change in our transportation choices and create good, sustainable jobs across the country.”
