Hydro One

It is with heavy hearts that we share the names of the Hydro One employees who lost their lives in Thursday's tragic accident: James Baragar, 39-years-old, Jeff Howes, 26-years-old, Darcy Jansen, 26-years-old, and Kyle Shorrock, 27-years-old.

Kuby

Business has been good at Kuby, an electrical and engineering construction firm that specializes in renewable energy. “We’ve been increasing revenue three to four times year-over-year since we started,” says Jake, an electrician by training who left the oil and gas industry to start Kuby with his friend Adam Yereniuk in 2015.

A November 2017 report by U.S. investment firm Lazard shows that wind energy costs continue to track lower across the globe. Since 2009, the unsubsidized levelized cost of energy (LCOE) for onshore utility-scale wind energy has decreased by 67 per cent. This is an ongoing trend. Just since last year’s report, levelized costs have declined by about 6 per cent.

Three of the four wind farm projects announced by the provincial government this month will rise in the south, near Pincher Creek or Bow Island. The fourth will be built northeast of Hanna, potentially benefitting a community impacted by long-term plans to phase out coal-fired power generation.

Wind Farm

The Alberta provincial government asked for bids to build 400 MW of wind power. 29 companies responded. When the dust cleared, the bids were so low, the government decided to increase its RfP by 50% to 600 MW. Premier Rachel Notley said the average of 3.7 cents per kilowatt-hour bid by the 3 winning companies is the lowest price for electricity from wind power ever recorded in Canada.

Pilz

At the end of 2017, Renate Pilz is leaving her active role in the Pilz Management Board. She hands over the management of the company to her two children, Susanne Kunschert and Thomas Pilz, with whom she has been leading the company for 10 years. As such, Pilz remains a family business.

ABB

The Mica hydroelectric plant is one of the largest earth-fill dams in the world, operating since the mid-1970s with a generating capacity of 2,805 megawatts (MW). It is one of British Columbia’s (BC) largest power generation facilities accounting for about 22 per cent of the generating capacity of the provincially-owned power utility, BC Hydro, and producing power for more than 650,000 homes each year.

Chaired by Sundeep Chauhan (Motion Picture Association), the AGM provided members with an opportunity to learn about recent developments in IP crime prevention and CACN’s role in advocacy. Sundeep announced the appointment of Katalin Molnar, CSA Group, as Vice-Chair of CACN. Schneider Electric

For the eighth year in a row, Schneider Electric, the global specialist in energy management and automation, participated as a proud sponsor in the 17th annual Tremblant 24h. Now in its 24th edition, the 2018 Canadian Electrical Code, Part I includes a number of significant updates and changes to better help electrical workers in the safe maintenance of electrical equipment and create safer electrical installations.

This edition features important revisions to many sections. For example, Section 26 now mandates the use of tamper-resistant receptacles in additional areas where children may be present. Section 62 now requires ground fault circuit interrupter protection for heating devices and controls in proximity to tubs, sinks, and shower stalls. Section 10 has been updated, reorganized, and significantly reduced in length.
