EV Charging Standards; Diveristy & Inclusion
This issue looks at the impact CSA standards have on electric vehicle charging stations. A lack of standardization encompassing the entire EV charging system creates bottlenecks in manufacturing because components without standards require closer inspection. Similarly on the topic electrification, Pratap Revuru explains Schneider’s Microgrid ‘in-a-box’ solution and how microgrids can improve energy resiliency and sustainability. This issue also features an article from EHRC’s Merertu Mogga Frissa discussing the lasting implications of racism and how it subtlety influences social, political, and economic dynamics. Also in this issue: EHRC, EFC, BCEA industry events are open for registration; a new electrical industry podcast; and Schneider unveils their new mySchneider digital portal. Good reading!

EV Standards
North American Standards for EV Charging Stations
With the environment a pressing concern, some governments have been taking steps to reduce their dependency upon fossil fuels. For example, the British government plans to ban the sale of new gasoline- and diesel-powered cars by 2035, while California is aiming to end its sale in the state by 2035. In Canada, the government has set targets for zero-emission vehicles reaching 10% of light-duty vehicle sales by 2025 and 100% by 2040 [1]. Electric vehicles — which use a rechargeable battery to power an electric motor — are the most popular option for replacing fossil fuel-powered cars, which include hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) and all-electric vehicles (EVs).

The Never-Ending Waves of Racism, Part 1: Reflections
By Merertu Mogga Frissa
Someone once asked me why we struggle with diversity and inclusion in Canada. My response was that we have never taken the time to discuss the value of both as a society. While Canada identifies itself as a multicultural country, the diverse make-up of the population itself is made to exist in a vacuum and outside of what multiculturalism seeks to achieve. This oversight forces the discussion about racism to exist within the limits of communities impacted by it while completely removing it from conversations at social and institutional levels.

Electrification
Pratap Revuru, Director of Microgrid Solutions and Strategic Partnerships, Schneider Electric
By Blake Marchand
Electric released its Microgrid Solution focused on small and medium sized buildings to the Canadian market. The solution integrates distributed energy resources for commercial, industrial, healthcare, and educational facilities. The solution can also be applied to small, remote communities where energy resiliency is an issue. When it comes to lowering carbon emissions and hitting climate change targets, “Ultimately, we need to think of how we can do it,” said Revuru, “that’s where we want to help our customers.” The aim for Schneider Electric is to make a complex process like turning a facility into a microgrid, into something that is simple and turn-key.
