Leadership
The People Rowing the Boat
By Keith Sones
I stared at the back of the white office door, the one I would have to pass through again, soon in fact. But I didn’t want to, didn’t feel like I could. Trembling, I desperately wanted to stay right where I was, locked away from the outside world. I could feel the flush in my face, feeling hotter and sweatier than the cool weather dictated, my hands clammy. When I woke up earlier that morning, a day of excitement, personal satisfaction and adventure had beckoned. Over the course of the past hour my hopes for happiness had diminished to the point where now I felt abject, miserable, and scared. I had no idea what to do next. The dream team, not even launched, was about to flame out and it was my fault.

Confidence is Built by Competence
By Shannon Tymosko
My name is Shannon Tymosko. I am a 2nd year Electrical Apprentice with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Worker (IBEW) Local 105, located in Hamilton Ontario. Electrical was not my first stop on my journey through adulthood. The first adult decision I made, like many at age 18, was to apply for College. I excelled at math and business. Naturally, on the advice of my school guidance councillors; math + business = accounting and so I applied and got accepted to Humber College. It was only a few months before I knew this was not the career for me, and ultimately made a switch to Child and Youth Work. Years later this led to a diploma, a slightly higher paying job than minimum wage at Youth Without Shelter, and a pile of debt. During this time, I maintained a CSR position at Cash Money, and this job helped finance my college years. Gradually this job would evolve to management roles, training coordinator and became my main source of income over the decade.

Canadian Elecrical Contractor Discussion
- Question on Fire Rating
"Hello Everyone, Just wanted to ask if is mandatory to fire rate the sockets installed in the vertical walls and if you have the section of the building code that requires that? If this is a mandatory requirement, what solutions do you use and are you happy with them price wise, quality and labour?"
- Fair Pricing
Frankie from CECD posed this question to the group: "I have a customer who tried to change their kitchen outlets themselves and didn't break the tabs. Breaker kept tripping. So I replaced their 4 outlets and covers. She is not happy with the 2 hour call out plus truck fees came to 235 with hst. Is that being greedy? She said no one else has come out at all."

Economy
- Building Permits in Canada Up 2.1% for February, Residential Construction Down 2.9%
The total value of building permits issued in February broke the $10 billion mark for the first time, as a jump in the non-residential sector more than offset the decline in the residential sector. Residential construction intentions decreased 2.9% to $6.8 billion in February, following a record month in January. In British Columbia, several high-value permits were issued for multi-family dwellings (+59.2%), including two for the University District condo development in the city of Surrey. However, declines in six provinces, including Ontario (-23.9%) and Alberta (-39.2%), pulled this component lower at the national level, with the total dropping 4.9% to $3.3 billion.
- Canadian Monthly Estimates of Business Openings and Closures, December 2021
