Codes & Standards
Guide to the Canadian Electrical Code, Part I
By William (Bill) Burr
Section 32 – Fire Alarm Systems, Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarms, and Fire Pumps, as outlined in Rule 32-000 Scope, is a supplementary or amendatory section of the code and provides additional and specific requirements for the location, installation, wiring, and protection, of local fire alarm systems, permanently connected smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, and fire pumps required by the National Building Code of Canada as referenced in Appendix G. For further information, reference should also be made to Canadian Standard CAN/ULC – S524 Standard for the Installation of Fire Alarm Systems published by https://canada.ul.com/. Appendix B contains important additional helpful notes and the CEC Handbook also contains helpful information. Fire alarm systems: Rule 32-100 specifies the requirements for insulated conductors and cables in fire alarm systems which include: copper material, ampacity, use of optical fiber cables, use of stranded conductors, insulation rated at 300 volts, determining wire size for raceways or integral assemblies, selection in accordance with rules 12-102(3) or 12-122(1)...

Addressing Pandemic Fatigue to Boost Employee Engagement
By Michelle Branigan
A quick google search of the term “pandemic fatigue” shows me it’s a topic on many people’s minds. We’re certainly all living it, even if we may not have thought to define it. Pandemic fatigue is the exhaustion we feel after living for a year in the pandemic lifestyle: adjusting constantly to new factors like public health restrictions; leaving, then returning, then leaving the workplace again; job loss; death and illness; caring for our children or parents; keeping up relationships which have all turned long-distance. Even a trip to the grocery store is logistically more complicated than it used to be.

Building a Control Narrative
By Matthew Payette
A lighting programming and control narrative is a document that is essential to coordinate the design/construction process with a fully realized final architectural product. It defines how lighting will integrate into the space and ultimately how humans will interact with that same space. Sometimes there is a gap between the initial visions of the designers and the final product. Other times, the final product and operation of the lighting systems is achieved but after much project management distress toward the end of the project. This can be remedied by defining and using a programming and control narrative. A programming and control narrative is a detailed description of all the desired timing, modes, access, and scenes of a lighting system, either globally (system wide) or locally (system sections). It can be digital, printed, verbal, visual, kinetic, or a combination all these things, tying together the functions of all lights.

Growers Guide to Energy-Savings, Incentives and Rebates in Canada
Heliospectra AB, a world leader in intelligent lighting technology for greenhouse and controlled plant growth environments, announces the release of a new guide with focus on energy-savings, incentives, and rebates. The free guides provide a detailed overview of the type of rebates available by province and the payback one can expect in 2021. In recent years many growers have found a new impediment to their business operations in the form of high utility bills and the need for higher phase power to sustain their facility and its needs. On average, lighting alone stands for nearly 38% of a facility’s total electricity consumption, second on the list after HVAC and dehumidification. This means great savings can be made by implementing energy efficient lighting solutions.
