Expectation Vs. Reality
My First Year as an Electrical Apprentice - Part Two
By Darci Spiteri
Being a female in the trade and a new apprentice, I had no idea what to expect on this jobsite. I knew I would be working at a school, with no idea what that entailed. It ended up being a completely new build, and I was grateful to see this job from start to finish. The guys I worked with that first day were great. They were helpful and made me feel comfortable right away. I didn't know what to expect, so I felt fortunate to have this support right off the bat.

In a recent Fluke New Plus survey, more than five dozen professionals laid out the most common mistakes they have seen and some best practices they have developed over their careers. Some narrowly avoided a tragic incident, learning valuable lessons as a result – albeit the hard way.

Canadian Electrical Contractor Discussion Group
- Question on Load Centre Placement and Minimum Clearance
"What does the code say about load center placement and minimum clearance? I have very limited options for the location on my new build cottage. The best spot that I have is between an exterior wall and back door. I have 3.5’ wide clearance between wall and door and 8’ high. Can I place it there? Alternatively I could put it on an interior wall that has a shower on the other side."
- Fire Rated Sockets
Emanuel asked the group if it's "mandatory to fire rate the sockets installed in the vertical walls and if you have the section of the building code that requires that? If this is a mandatory requirement, what solutions do you use and are you happy with them price wise, quality and labour?"

Test Your Knowledge of the Canadian Electrical Code - Part 1
- The Questions: Motors and Generators
Take this opportunity to test your knowledge of the Canadian Electrical Code - Part 1. Here are four questions on motors and generators. Q1: What determines the insulation temperature rating and ampacity of motor supply insulated conductors? Q2: Where do you refer to determine the ampacity rating of insulated conductors supplying individual motors, two or more motors, or feeder and secondary insulated conductors? Q3: Does each motor branch circuit, starter or controller require a separate disconnecting means? Q4: Does a generator driven by electricity supplying a 2-wire grounded system need a protective device that disconnects both insulated conductors?
- The Answers: Essential Electrical Systems
In last week’s issue, you had the opportunity to answer our questions about the Code and best practices. Here are the answers to those questions on Essential Electrical Systems: Health Care: Q: When do rules 24-302 to 24-306 apply to health care facilities? A: When the interruption of the normal power supply would jeopardize the safe and effective care of patients. Q: How do you determine which electrical systems are essential and do they need to be kept separate from other wiring and equipment? A: Rule 24-302 outlines that the health care administration designates which supply load circuits are essential electrical circuits and that the wiring of the essential electrical system must be kept separate from other wiring and equipment...
