Best practices? Yes, it's time to talk about them again
In the midst of the third wave, we learned this week that the economy is doing well and that the recovery will be faster than expected, so even more work for electricians. This is certainly a perfect time to review best practices and our knowledge of the Code. So, let’s review some of them. As I said last month, a good way to improve our knowledge about best practices is to engage in discussions with our peers. Next month we will talk about safety, so join our Canadian Electrical Contractor Discussions Facebook group to share your ideas and concerns on best practices and your stories on safety. Good reading!

IES Vancouver Presents: Avoiding NLC Deployment Pitfalls with Steve Mesh
Networked Lighting Control (NLC) systems have gotten simpler and easier to install and commission. Even so, these are still systems with a variety of parts that must be installed correctly in order for the NLC to work properly. In this presentation, we’ll review a research project where four different NLCs were installed on one floor of a large office building. The presenter was on-site to observe the installation of some of these systems and documented problems that arose.

Lighting Controls
Benefits for Electrical Contractors of Learning Networked Controls
By Steve Mesh
Are you an electrical contractor? Are you new to the world of Networked Lighting Controls (NLCs)? Are you looking for new opportunities to strengthen your business in these uncertain times? If you answered yes to all three of these questions, read on. NLCs are a (relatively) new introduction to the lighting industry. I say “relatively” because, in point of fact, some networked control systems have been available for decades. If you haven’t had any prior experience with installing NLCs, then you might think these are fancy and highfalutin. Are they really? Let’s see. By definition, a “system” is automatically complex. But really, how complex are NLCs? I’d say they are at the low end of the complexity spectrum. If you are an electrical contractor who has installed a low-voltage relay panel in a commercial or institutional building, then you’ve already had experience installing a lighting control system.

High Voltage Is Not High Risk!
By Terry Becker, P.Eng., CESCP, IEEE Senior Member
It is interesting that these two words “High Voltage” have been used throughout the history of our use of electricity to use fear as a tactic to keep people away from electrical equipment located indoors or outdoors and in turn has also been considered “high risk.” Would you believe me if I told you that, actually, working on low voltage electrical equipment may be a higher inherent risk level or the same inherent risk level as working on or near high voltage electrical equipment? With the application of expected and appropriate hierarchy risk controls methods low voltage and high voltage energized electrical work task would both be low risk. In the CSA Z462 Workplace electrical safety Standard it doesn’t use the voltage level of electrical equipment to define low risk, medium risk, high risk or extreme risk/danger.

The Questions: Motors and Generators
Take this opportunity to test your knowledge of the Canadian Electrical Code - Part 1. Here are four questions on motors and generators. Q1: What determines the insulation temperature rating and ampacity of motor supply insulated conductors? Q2: Where do you refer to determine the ampacity rating of insulated conductors supplying individual motors, two or more motors, or feeder and secondary insulated conductors? Q3: Does each motor branch circuit, starter or controller require a separate disconnecting means? Q4: Does a generator driven by electricity supplying a 2-wire grounded system need a protective device that disconnects both insulated conductors?
