Green Technology Issue
Being the fifth issue of the month, focuses on ‘Green’ technology and news. Steven Lupo of Trilliant stops by once again to explain the impact AMI (Advanced Metering Technology) on the utility sector. AMI technology will give utilities and end users more flexibility and visibility in tracking usage, adding new tools to improve efficiency and creating new revenue streams. There have also been several investments in electrified transit, including school buses. In a recent release, Schneider Electric stresses the importance of making new and existing buildings more efficient to tackle climate change. Buildings make up 1/3 of the world’s CO2 emissions. In Canada buildings make up 12% (2019) of emissions, which has been rising since 2016. The recent IPCC report on Climate Change presents a bleak outlook and Canada remains a significant contributor of emissions overall. The energy transition requires investment, but it also presents economic opportunity – as Schneider suggests with respect to digital innovation and electrification, the solutions already exist. Good reading!

Advanced Metering Infrastructure
Steven Lupo on AMI 2.0 and How Technology is Impacting the Utility Sector
By Blake Marchand
Steven Lupo, Managing Director of Trilliant Canada says this is a critical time for utilities as the industry shifts towards more-connected technologies. “Of course, anyone in the municipal services industry would comment that there’s always some form of disruption and challenge going on from various factors,” he said. However, the utility sector is on its way toward the second technological wave of Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI). Similar to Industry 4.0 in industrial and manufacturing sectors, AMI 2.0 represents the implementation of edge computing, cloud services, IT, and software data analytics to streamline operations and improve services, with the potential of increasing revenue.

A Look at DC Microgrids
By Craig DiLouie
Direct current (DC) is emerging as a competitive or complementary power distribution option at the grid, community, and building level. Among the advantages for building owners is potential efficiencies in operating DC-based LED lighting and controls as well as plug-and-play sensor and controls installation, including networking that can unlock Internet of Things (IoT) applications. Due to these advantages coupled with greater resiliency in the event of a grid failure, microgrids are expected to grow to a $25 billion market by 2026 with a CAGR of 24% between 2020 and 2024, according to Global Market Insights.

Digitization & Electrification
Building a Decarbonized World Means Improving Energy Efficiency in New and Old Buildings
By Schneider Electric
Energy waste is happening all around us, and it’s contributing to climate change. Yet fighting this invisible foe is near impossible – unless we make the invisible visible. Digital innovation, combined with a shift to more electrification, holds the key to tackling climate change, unlocking the ability to see and measure our impact, so we can recognize and reduce it. Ironically, digital adoption is also one of the biggest barriers to action. Confusion around what to invest in has caused many businesses to delay decisions and wait for a ‘miracle cure’. This paralysis is part of the problem.

Eaton’s Wiring Devices Introduces a Humidity Sensor and Fan Control
Eaton’s humidity sensor and fan control device is a single pole humidity sensor for controlling the humidity level in a room. This sensor controls the humidity level by detecting excess humidity in damp areas, such as bathrooms, laundry rooms or spas, then activating the ventilation fan when humidity is present and turning the fan off when the humidity level has dropped. This device helps to prevent mold and mildew by detecting and removing moisture in the air, which in turn provides for a more comfortable and welcoming environment. The fan also will turn off the exhaust fan after the humidity level drops to a comfortable level which helps to save energy.
