Proposed Solar Project Would Be Western Canada’s Largest

EDF EN Canada Development Inc. is proposing to develop, construct and operate the Vulcan Solar Energy Centre (the Project). Once complete, Vulcan Solar will be the largest solar project in Western Canada, with a maximum capacity of 60 megawatts (MW) —enough electricity to power 8,520 homes every year.  

The project would be situated on 600 acres of private land within the Blackspring Ridge Wind Project, a facility co-owned by EDF EN Canada Inc. and Enbridge Inc. Power from the solar panels will be transmitted four kilometres through underground cabling to the Blackspring Ridge Wind Project substation, located northwest of the site.

EDF EN expects to start operating the project in 2019. The companyhas over 1,500 MW of wind and solar energy in varying stages of development, active construction, and operation across the country.
The capital cost for the project is expected to be $150 million.
