Canadian Electrical Industry News Week

As industry experts you know the products you use everyday better than anyone and should have input on what information you receive about products and what could improve them.

Therefore, we want your insight on the biggest challenges or issues you face when installing loadcentres, breakers (CAFI, GFI's…) and other surge protection devices. We ask that you do not provide product specific details but rather your general issues and concerns or any questions that have come to mind while working with these product types. Provide us with your valued expert insight into the issues you have faced so manufacturers can better inform you about the installation and use of these products. Lets generate some discussion that will help guide the Industry.

I am doing a service upgrade/relocation from 100amp to 200. I was thinking about keeping the existing 100amp panel as subpanel. Do the 15 amp breakers have to be changed to arc fault. This is in Manitoba

We are considering registering our son for the month electrical pre-apprenticeship program at Skilled Trades College in the GTA. Is this a reputable school/program? Would any of you higre a graduate from this program or is there another program that we should be looking at?

In my opinion pre apprentichip schooling is often a waste of time and money. Safety training would be much more valuable. First aid, CSTS, Elevated work platform, WHIMIS.. with these items in place this reduces the cost to hire a new to the trade person and puts him on the top of my list for interviews.

    Question:

If allowed, under WHAT circumstances are you allowed to run an electrical receptacle inside a wood-burning fireplaces firebox in order to install a fireplace insert and plug in the blower?

I wish to know the stability of the electrical wiring in household kitchen and laundry appliances. I do recall seeing this report prior to 2006 and was hoping to see a newer one. The first report made quite a difference in the residential tenancies market for instance so am searching for a similar report that is more recent.

Running a continuous ground in transformers, sometimes there is a group of lugs that make it a pain in the butt to run the continuous ground through. I'm surprised that by now there isn't some special lug just for this purpose, to make this process effortless, and more effective. Even a little sexy looking. This old system has to go. Cheers, I love this trade! 30yrs

Accessories are very important in our lives. Some in the corner we will ignore, if it is not the existence of accessories, we will feel a lot of inconvenience. For example, the wire-to-wire connector in the car door lock (https://www.hrb-connector.com/Wire-to-wire-connector-in-car-door-lock-id3587464.html), its role is to use The door locks connect different circuits, allowing the circuit to cycle to achieve the door lock switch.
The working principle is to connect the communication between the blocked or isolated circuits in the circuit to make the current flow and make the circuit achieve the predetermined function. Mainly composed of four basic structural components: contacts, housing (depending on the type), insulators and accessories. In the industry, it is also commonly referred to as jackets, connectors, and molded casings. Wire-to-wire connector.

Worker RiskMany of us take risks in their daily lives, such as using our cell phone while driving or exceeding the speed limits, while fortunately avoiding any potential injury and damage. We are rewarded by a certain convenience when we take risks, such as apparent time savings as well as the tacit approval of observers who do not oppose our risky behaviour.

To reduce injuries in the workplace, we must all recognize that we are accepting certain risks on a daily basis and acknowledge the factors influencing risk tolerance.

More than 70% of workers believe there is an opportunity for more electrical safety training in the workplace, according to a January 2020 Fluke survey of 162 electrical workers. Three reasons why electricians may feel they don't get enough safety training for their jobs are because effective programs take a lot of time to set up, employees are often not engaged in the training or safety meeting, and safety isn’t talked about in a way that builds toward a strong safety program. Here’s what you can do to create a stronger training program.
